When that happens, I tend to see large mushrooms show up in my lawn (the largest ones here are about 6&#8243; or so across):<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lawn mushrooms\" id=\"image233\" src=\"https:\/\/bendreth.com\/__oneclick_uploads\/2007\/08\/shrooms.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This evening, I needed to mow the lawn before it rained again. I found this beneath one of my rosebushes:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Slime mold\" id=\"image234\" src=\"https:\/\/bendreth.com\/__oneclick_uploads\/2007\/08\/slime-mold.JPG\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I figured it was some sort of fungus, so I did a websearch for photos I could match it with. I found an <a title=\"Adelaide-area fungus photos\" href=\"http:\/\/njhurst.com\/fungi\/\">Australian page<\/a> (Adelaide area, which is interesting to me because I have relatives there) that identified it as a slime mould (his spelling).<\/p>\n<p>Given that, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/waynesword.palomar.edu\/slime1.htm\">another page<\/a> that identifies it as an early stage of Fuligo Septica, commonly known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.messiah.edu\/Oakes\/fungi_on_wood\/crust%20and%20parchment\/species%20pages\/Fuligo%20septica.htm\">scrambled egg slime<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/botit.botany.wisc.edu\/Toms_fungi\/june99.html\">dog vomit slime mold<\/a>, and there are some disgusting photos of the later stages. It is, apparently, the only slime mold that can <a href=\"http:\/\/jeq.scijournals.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/31\/3\/1038\">concentrate heavy metals<\/a> without damage to itself.<\/p>\n<p>What I found slightly unnerving is the statement that &#8220;<font size=\"4\">This creeping fungus moves very slowly in amoeboid fashion.&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p>Gaaah!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been fairly wet for Denver recently.
