I&#8217;m not going to be anywhere near a fresh start this New Year&#8217;s, but I can at least try to clear out some of the links I&#8217;ve been accumulating.<\/p>\n<p>This is not any sort of year-in-review, so don&#8217;t expect comprehensive links or dots being connected. This is just some of what I&#8217;ve accumulated in the last couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll start with the <em>Christmas\/winter-related links<\/em> while they&#8217;re fresh.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/2011\/12\/24\/portal-xmas-tree.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&#038;utm_medium=twitter\">Portal Christmas Tree<\/a> is pretty cool. It&#8217;s appeared on a number of websites recently. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neatorama.com\/2011\/12\/27\/portal-2-the-present\/\">Portal 2 present<\/a> wasn&#8217;t quite so widely noted. This last Portal-related link shows <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neatorama.com\/2011\/12\/24\/this-gif-reveals-santas-secret-power\/\">how Santa gets around quickly<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the Portal tree, which is one tree in two places, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.investors.com\/Article\/594258\/201112120812\/obama-white-house-christmas-trees.htm\">the Obama&#8217;s have 37 separate Christmas trees<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never cared for Star Trek ornaments, but I like <a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/vodkapundit\/2011\/12\/19\/want-5\/\">this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re concerned that your stocking won&#8217;t hold your stuff, you can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/home\/improvement\/interior\/diy-christmas-build-the-ultimate-stocking?click=pm_latest\">build one of these<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Do you tell spooky stories at Christmas? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.metafilter.com\/110935\/The-Festival\">Some people do<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people like music to go with (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.metafilter.com\/110839\/Tis-the-solstice-and-the-season-Take-it-away-Old-Ones\">inspired by<\/a>) those spooky stories.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have entirely too much time to <a href=\"http:\/\/nerdapproved.com\/approved-products\/10-chilling-super-nerdy-snow-sculptures-featured\/\">play in the snow<\/a>. Looks like fun. Back around 1977, I made this kind of fancy snow sculpture with my housemates, but I&#8217;ve not done it since then. MIT has a new high-speed camera system that can <a href=\"http:\/\/chime.in\/user\/Bill\/chime\/83832090542510080\">show the advance of light<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/royalsociety.org\/news\/Royal-Society-journal-archive-made-permanently-free-to-access\/\">archives of the Royal Society<\/a> have been put onto the net for free access.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/naturewantstoeatyou.tumblr.com\/\">Nature wants to eat you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is cool! Watch the video showing how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geek.com\/articles\/geek-cetera\/superhydrophobic-spray-means-no-more-clothes-to-wash-20111112\/\">a new spray can keep your clothes and other things clean<\/a>. I could use this on my windows and shower doors.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health\/healthnews\/8889031\/Stem-cell-test-is-biggest-breakthrough-in-treating-heart-attacks-for-a-generation.html\">Another success for adult stem cells<\/a>. Personally, I wear a cheap Casio watch currently, but I&#8217;ve been thinking of getting myself a nicer one. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.watchismo.com\/\">Here<\/a> is one website I&#8217;ve checked out. You can find some nicer watches (definitely out of my price range) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betteridge.com\/watches\/\">here<\/a>, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betteridge.com\/audemars-piguet-jules-audemars-chrono-minute-repeater-tourbillon-platinum\/p\/4516\/\">this one<\/a> that is <em>way<\/em>out of my price range. It is beautiful, though. There is some attraction in an <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.makezine.com\/archive\/2011\/11\/toolbox-review-metawatch-android-compatible-wristwatch.html\">Android watch<\/a>, though.<\/p>\n<p>I had a Digi-Comp1 when I was younger. All that I have left is the manual. I may have to play with this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoopsfolks.com\/digicomp1\/\">emulator<\/a> some time, but it was a pretty rudimentary computer, so perhaps not. I wish I had.<\/p>\n<p>I have fond memories of Rogue, but they&#8217;re not too specific, because it&#8217;s been a long time since I&#8217;ve played. I wonder how close <a href=\"http:\/\/www.incursion-roguelike.net\/\">this<\/a> is.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t tried <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stencyl.com\/\">this game-development system<\/a> yet, but it looks interesting.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s not only an app for that, there&#8217;s now a <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2011\/12\/13\/openspace\/\">brick-and-mortar app store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It can&#8217;t tell you what changes were made, but there&#8217;s a new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2067474\/Back-reality-Computer-program-shows-EXACTLY-images-magazine-photoshopped.html\">computer program that can tell you what parts of an image have been changed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I remember reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rexresearch.com\/emships\/empship.htm\">this article<\/a> (the Popular Science one) when it came out. I thought it would be a neat thing, and wanted to try making an aquarium pump. Unfortunately, I was a poor pre-teen at the time, and had no way to obtain the supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crispgreen.com\/2011\/11\/designer-ron-arad-reinvents-the-wheel-for-a-smoother-ride\/\">This looks cool<\/a> (and I almost put it in the art category), but I have to wonder about traction.<\/p>\n<p>How cool is the idea of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eetimes.com\/electronics-news\/4230919\/MEMS-enters-world-of-precision-archery\">black boxes for archery arrows<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><em>Politics, culture, and the economy:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/ftpdocs\/125xx\/doc12577\/budgetinfographic.htm\">infographic about the Federal budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If the media were actually conservative, or even impartial or honest, <a href=\"http:\/\/thenewamerican.com\/usnews\/crime\/10274-as-kansas-governor-sebelius-destroyed-evidence-to-protect-planned-parenthood\">this<\/a> would be one of a number of major administration scandals.<\/p>\n<p>The claim has been made that Occupy Wall Street is a grassroots uprising just like the Tea Party, but on the opposite side of the political spectrum. <a href=\"http:\/\/mypetjawa.mu.nu\/archives\/209965.php\">Is it<\/a>? Is it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.verumserum.com\/?p=33490\">really<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>I had to ask some friends not to invite me for dinner if they were also inviting a specific neighbor of theirs to the same dinner; at each get-together where we were both present, he seemed to be challenging me to respond to his provocatively-stated political opinions, and I refused to submit myself to him being obnoxious all evening, and I didn&#8217;t want to make a scene. <a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/blog\/the-boorish-liberal-at-thanksgiving-dinner\/?singlepage=true\">It&#8217;s not an unknown problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are a lot of scary charts and graphs around. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.american.com\/2011\/11\/2-terrifying-and-depressing-unemployment-charts\/\">Here are two of them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Are white men gods? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fredoneverything.net\/WhiteMales.shtml\">Fred makes a good case for it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At the very least, it appears that <a href=\"http:\/\/anepigone.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/old-republican-white-men-know-whats.html\">old Republican white men know what&#8217;s going on in the world<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Muslims have killed more than 1000 Christians this year. They don&#8217;t limit themselves to Christian targets though, and <a href=\"http:\/\/talkstraight.tumblr.com\/post\/13249366401\/put-the-numbers-in-perspective\">the numbers add up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It used to be that medicine had little relation to or dependence upon evolutionary concepts. As that is no longer the case, <a href=\"http:\/\/voxday.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/secularists-dilemma.html\">I weep for the future of medical treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.samharris.org\/blog\/item\/the-truth-about-violence\/\">When should you use violence<\/a>?
