Ravel’s Bolero performed by a one-man group. Isn’t it wonderful what can be done with video overlays and compositing these days?

“Bolero” is a very funny composition. Although it is simple, it’s very tough for a orchestra to play because it’s so tediously boring, and it can’t work without a conductor.
On days when we happened to be listening to a classical station, I’d slip it into the office CD player with the volume turned up enough to hear the early quiet parts so that the ending blasted out at 11. I timed it so that I was already gone to lunch by then.
I can believe that … I got to see the Denver Symphony play it a year or two ago. The drummer doing the repetitive “tink tinka-ta-tink-tink” had to be bored out of his skull keeping that going quietly for the entire piece.
