Snow!

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Woke up this morning to the first snow of the season, here in town, anyway. There’s already been snow in the mountains and north of here. Just a light dusting, but it’s still snow.

It improved my mood … last night, I was trying to install a new range hood. I replaced the stove when I moved in, and pulled the extant range hood because it had been damaged by a grease fire the previous occupant had suffered. Sanded the burnt paint off the cabinets, had the paint matched, repainted the sanded areas, and then last night tried to install the new range hood.

Had to go back to Lowe’s to get pieces that weren’t included in the box (wiring, lamps, etc.), and got everything ready. Then, trying to put it in place, I found out that the mounting holes weren’t in the same place as the prior range hood – I can’t mount it without modifying the cabinets or using bolts, rather than the mounting screws. Where the screws are supposed to be is a void space, because the holes are too far inward to allow the screws to go into the wood at the bottom of the cabinet sides.

Ah, well. One more thing to deal with later.

So there we were …

Last evening, Marion and I went to see The Drowsy Chaperone at the DCPA. I enjoyed it more than Marion, which may have been because the “Second City” heritage is pretty obvious.

After the performance, we got to my car, and were going to go for a late dessert. Pulling out of the parking lot, though, the feel of working the gearshift was different. I mentioned it to Marion after I’d shifted a couple more times on the way through downtown. I pulled up at the stoplight at 15th and Platte, and was unable to put the car into gear to move out again – there was absolutely no resistance to movement of the shift lever. With the help of a bystander, we got the car around the corner and parked, then we called AAA.

Marion “flicked” the shift lever up and watched it fall back a couple of times. I told her that it happened to every guy sooner or later, which lightened the situation a little bit. Since AAA told us “45 minutes,” we went across the street to My Brother’s Bar. Marion got her dessert, and I had a beer (Kronenbourg 1664). It actually only took about 25 minutes for the tow truck to arrive, and we were able to get a taxi easily. If we’d gone with the tow truck to my mechanic’s garage, we’d probably not have been able to get one. (No, my car is not of German manufacture, but I’ve been going to Joe since about 1981.)

So, I’m currently overstocked on houses and understocked on vehicles. Not the best situation to be in. Could be worse – at least the car was in neutral when this happened. It’s going to put a short-term crimp in my style, though.

Halloween Prep

Time to start thinking about what to carve on the Jack O’Lantern. I’m thinking Iron Man’s helmet might be a good image, but I haven’t decided yet. I don’t have photos of all the ones I’ve done – I’m missing the one I did of Tora from the anime series Ushio to Tora, for one – but here are a couple I did for previous Halloweens:

In the ABBA shrine

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Last night, Marion and I finally got around to seeing Mamma Mia! We’d seen the Broadway show and enjoyed it, and figured the scenery of the Greek islands would be pretty nice, too.

Marion’s comment afterward was that the movie was more frenetic than the Broadway production. I agreed – the larger cast and not being limited to a stage allowed for more activity. I also said I liked the Broadway show’s disco costumes more … they were glitzier and less subdued, thus more fun. Of course, it’s hard for either of them to match up with the costumes in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which also features the music of ABBA.

And, speaking of ABBA, and bringing things around to the title of this post, in most shrines, you have worshippers. In the ABBA shrine, though …

Not that anyone will notice

… or that the rate of posting is expected to change much, but I’ll be attending the WorldCon for the next few days. Probably not very heavily, though … I really want to get into my new house.

Father’s Day activities

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

So, my daughter took me out for dim sum this morning, and then to see the new Indiana Jones movie. Silly and stupid, but fun. I do have a slight problem with one of the actors – every time I see his name, I think of this guy. It’s only a resemblance in the sounds of their names, but …

I spent the rest of the day packing – I’ll be moving soon. Not leaving the Denver area, just buying a different house.

The weather has been nice this week

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

So I was planning to do some garden work today. I’ve got flower beds that need weeding and watering, my lawn needs edging and watering, and there are too many dandelions coming up.

I think I’ll postpone all that, though … it’s snowing.

Sore Thumb (Drive)

Monday, April 14th, 2008

Every now and then, something breaks. I’ve had two USB thumb drives go bad on me (and a couple others go missing). The most recent one to go bad was a 2 gig one. I try not to keep anything really important on them, but they’re a lot more convenient than burning CDs or DVDs, so that doesn’t always hold.

In any case, I knew there was a lot of stuff on this one that I hadn’t saved yet, so I wanted to offload it, if I could. There were two options – either there was a mechanical failure, or one of the chips had gone bad. If a chip had gone bad, I was out of luck. If it was mechanical, I could possibly do something about it.

Since I had an old USB 1.0 hub that was itself acting a little flakey, I decided to sacrifice both of them to a rescue attempt. Now, a soldering iron is supposedly one of the most dangerous things a software type can have in hand, as illustrated below. It worked, however. And isn’t that what really matters?

A learning experience

Monday, April 7th, 2008

I entered a contest recently. I didn’t win, but I had fun.

I had to learn how to use iMovie, which turns out to be a toy I’ll probably use more now that I’ve learned enough to be dangerous.

If you’re interested, you can find all of the contest entries here. I’m #48. The entries that impressed me the most are #3, #19, and #22.

Novelties

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Swallow Hill will be hosting a Ukulele Festival in a few weeks. As far as I’m aware, it will be Denver’s first. Should be fun. I’m still trying to decide which ticket level I want to purchase, and what I want to practice up for the open stage (if I decide to get up on the open stage).

A couple of weeks earlier, we’ll have the regular Denver area ukulele group meeting at Swallow Hill. I missed the December meeting, at which musical themes were decided for the upcoming year. January’s theme is “Novelty Songs.” That happens to be the type of song that is probably my favorite – I know lots of them. Most, unfortunately, I can sing. As opposed to sing while playing, that is. Singing while playing is a skill I’m working on, complicated by the fact that I don’t know how to play many of the songs I can sing.

In any case, I have a few such I can already perform (such as Their Brains Were Small and They Died, Don’t Pet The Dog, and It’s Hard to be Humble), and I’m working on more. I can play and sing Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport – I just need to make them happen simultaneously. I’ve been working out the chords for The Witch Doctor Song (“Ting tang walla walla bing bang”). It was pretty straightforward getting the chorus to sound nice when I tried to play it in C, but I couldn’t make progress on the bridge until I retried it in A.

It’s a matter of finding the right sound, and I couldn’t find the right sounds up the neck in C. I’m actually better at working out chords on the banjo, but sometimes that doesn’t produce things that sound good to me on a uke. As an illustration, I found some chords online for Madiera, M’Dear, but I couldn’t get them to sound right on the uke. That may be due to the fact that I’m more familiar with a version by Dan Murphy, and not with the Flanders & Swann version.

To finish, here are a couple of novelty songs for your enjoyment. The first is via Bits and Pieces, and the second via The Last of the Few (site NSFW).
