Anniversary

My iMac came home one year ago today. Now, I’m thinking about a MacBook or MacBook Pro to replace the laptop I killed recently.

If it’s not one thing, it’s two things

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Well, the laptop can use an external monitor. Not that I’d doubted it, I’d just never done it. Since I work with bringing up new hardware, I’ve grown to expect things not to work until they’ve been tested.

Unfortunately, the laptop won’t boot anymore. Apparently, lsass.exe has decided that the user accounts aren’t set up properly. Since I never set up any, this is disturbing. What’s worse is that the damned thing won’t respond to F8 to boot into Safe Mode, which is the prescribed method of dealing with the problem. The only keys it will respond to during the boot are F2, to get into the BIOS configuration, and F12, to boot from LAN.

Maybe a new laptop is closer than I’d thought.

A bad end to a good day

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

Yesterday was a pretty good day. Company picnic at the zoo, went to the Titanic artifacts exhibit at the museum, had a nice light dinner (tapas and beer at Tastes). Then, I packed up my laptop in preparation for working today, and didn’t notice the translucent cap from a thumb drive sitting on it before I closed the lid.

I now have about half of the display still working. I guess that means I start saving my pennies again. I suspect I’ll end up going for a Mac laptop – I replaced my WinXP desktop with an iMac some time ago, so it would be nice to be able use common software on both. I could pick up a copy of Parallels Desktop so that I could run the WinXP programs I require, but that’s for another day.

Today, I need to see how well the laptop runs with an external monitor. I know someone who’s been running a laptop with a totally dead display for a couple of years using an external monitor; I may not be in a real rush to replace mine yet.

I guess I’m not one of the cool kids

Not that this was deliberate or anything – I try not to use much profanity, but I don’t have that much problem with it.

Online Dating

Mingle2Online Dating

Via David J. (although that link’s going to add to my score – the only thing Mingle found was one use of the word “gun”).

Update: I guess it doesn’t … the link is treated like a single word. So, if you want to use a lot of profanity without boosting your rating, stickthe wordstogether.

Law for Bloggers

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Maggie’s Farm had a link to 12 Important U.S. laws every blogger should know. They’re a bit more general than that; some of them are important for any website. One of the commenters pointed to EFF’s Legal Guide for Bloggers.

Looks like I’ve got some reading to do, and perhaps some changes to make.

Blogroll update

It was time; I had a few things I needed to add.

Well, that was a bit different

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

My previous post just stretched the mold a bit. My blog is mostly a “Distraction” blog, to use the taxonomy I found at Roger van Oech’s (my blog is all about “shiny things,” to use my daughter’s terminology.

That last post was more an amalgam of the other three categories, and I’m of two minds about that. On the one hand, I tend to be the shy and retiring type who tries to keep a fair amount of privacy (a friend lets me use her grocery store affinity card, so that we can both hide our purchasing preferences). On the other hand, I’ve been working for years on being less shy and retiring. Perhaps this is just another indicator of progress?

New linkage

I’ve added some new music links to the blogroll.

First, there’s The Walrus Speaks, a music blog with video and audio. The author is a left-wing Hindu, but he’s got pretty good taste in music, as far as I’ve seen so far. I can’t get the audio-only player working in Safari, but have no trouble with Firefox.

Next is Senses Working Overtime. This one has music reviews and links to other music sites, including the Why Fidelity podcasts.

For ukulele fans, we have this site, home of the Big Muffin Serious Band and the Serious Ukulele Ensemble. Lots of lyrics and chords, some tablature. More at Ukulele Beatles Fun!.

Finally, in honor of the recent St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve added Ceolas and the Irish Song Lyrics site.

Win a PS3

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Wizbang Tech is giving away a PS3 for Christmas, and the first task in the contest is to make Wizbang one of your Technorati favorites.

This post, besides letting everyone else (as if anyone else reads my blog) know about the contest, is to “claim” my blog by setting up my Technorati Profile.

Not a good idea, because …

It’s tempting to leave several tabs open in your browser, with sites open that make you think, “I’ll have to blog about this soon.”

However, that leaves you at the mercy of uninterrupted electrical power.

Therefore, you lose out on reading about what I lost out on writing about. Better luck next time (unless, in your opinion, that was the lucky thing to happen).
