It’s all adding up

December 10th, 2010

My car has been giving me a few problems lately. About a week ago, I had some errands to run at lunch. When I tried to start the engine, it ground for several seconds without starting. Releasing the key and trying again produced an immediate “catch.” However, the engine light came on, and the car had no acceleration. Instead of running my errands, I drove it to my mechanic. The starter coil assembly needed replacement. Just under $800 later, I had my car back.

Less than five miles later, the engine light came on again. I went in to the mechanic the next morning to have the codes read and reset. Catalytic converter and rear 02 sensors. I left with the admonition to bring it in if the light came on again. Five miles later, it did. So, I brought the car back. About $250 later, I had a new rear O2 sensor.

About 30-40 miles later, the engine light came on again. My next visit showed that the catalytic converter needs replacement. I’m taking it in again next week, and expect to get my car back in another $600-$900.

Bleah. Oh, well. My father’s rule of thumb for when it was time to buy a new car hasn’t been met yet (continuing repair bills equivalent to a car payment), so I’m not happy, but I’m not particularly worried yet.

On the shore a bat, or maybe an umbrella

I wish I had known about this auction earlier. Not that I’d have been able to take advantage of it, but still …

This is a test

I’m seeing if I can post from my phone, preferably with a photo. If I’m lucky, then (and you’re not, perhaps), there’ll be a cat photo below this.

Skelly at rest

Ah, I see that I’ll have to be careful with orientation of the camera with cellphone photos I want to upload. Good to know. I also don’t get a scrollbar on my categories list, so anything that I post from the phone may not have the correct tags.

Why doesn’t my job doesn’t bring me into contact with anyone like this?

Olivia Munn has been named Tech Girl of 2011 by Men’s Health magazine. I’ve sometimes watched her show on G4, but not particularly often. I like this photo of her from the article:

It’s a very nice photo, but there’s something familiar about it … ah, yes. Here we go.

Fun site

November 17th, 2010

I found a website recently that I’ve been keeping in an open tab and refreshing daily. I like its theme: science fiction TV and movies from the 1970s. Check it out.

I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit.

It’s the only way to be sure. (NSFW photos at link)

This is being (humorously) referred to as a follow-on to Sarah Palin’s Alaska. I’ll admit that there’s some humor there, just because of the juxtaposition of values and representatives. There’s a point, though, at which something goes from “disturbing and uncomfortable” to “absolutely wrong.” San Francisco is already partially into the second zone, and apparently moving further into it all the time.

There are definitely reasons

November 17th, 2010

One website I go to classifies some posts under a category named something like, “Reasons we aren’t nearly afraid enough of the Japanese.” I think this would fall into that category. There is a type of performer in Japan called the idol singer. There have been idols who were “merely” popular performers, idols who were corporate image representatives, and so on. They’re a long-lived enough cultural phenomenon that they’ve been reasonably common in anime, as well, with one character whose singing was sufficient to stop an interstellar war.

Now, they’re not even required to be real people for live performances in the real world.

One has to wonder what the people in the audience actually saw – is the technology advanced enough for them to see what we can see in the video, or was this done in postprocessing? But don’t worry about where they can possibly go from here – they went there about a year ago.

Video found at Snapped Shot.

Virus protection racket

It’s incredible how ingenious con artists can be, and disheartening to realize what kind of wild stories people are gullible enough to believe.

It’s been a quiet day

November 12th, 2010

Which is nice for Veteran’s Day. Quiet gives you time for contemplation. Some good food for thought can be found at Blackfive – just keep scrolling down; there are several Veteran’s Day posts worth reading. I also like Bunk’s post about his grandfather in World War I.

Changing weather

November 10th, 2010

We got our first snowfall of the season yesterday; I woke up to white roofs and snow on the grassy areas. It seems abrupt, because just Saturday we were near the record high for the date, but that’s just how it happens sometimes.

I like living in Colorado, because I like having four seasons, but I will admit that the older I get, the less I’m enamored of the cold. Part of that is the fact that I don’t do downhill skiing anymore because of my knees, but I also feel the cold more than I used to. Ah, well, it won’t be that many months until warm weather comes around again … time does seem to run more quickly as I get old, also.
